Genetic Testing for Hereditary Cancer Risk

PrimaryCare

Understanding Hereditary Cancer Risk Assessment and Testing

Cancer affects millions of individuals each year in the United States, with an estimated 2 million new cases expected in 2025.¹ Of those, approximately 10% are linked to inherited genetic mutations—commonly referred to as hereditary cancers. ²

On a global scale, the impact is even more significant. By 2050, it's projected that out of 35 million new cancer diagnoses worldwide, around 3.5 million may be hereditary. ³

What Is Hereditary Cancer Risk Testing?

Hereditary cancer risk testing is a type of genetic test that looks for specific gene mutations passed down through families. These mutations can significantly increase a person's lifetime risk of developing certain types of cancer, such as breast, ovarian, colon, prostate, or pancreatic cancer.

Testing is performed using a simple saliva or blood sample, which is analyzed for known genetic changes associated with inherited cancer risk.

What to Expect During the Process

Before testing is completed, several important steps are taken during your visit:

  • Detailed Family History: A thorough review of your personal and family medical history is conducted to assess potential risk.
  • Eligibility Screening: We follow evidence-based guidelines to determine whether genetic testing is appropriate for you.
  • Pre-Test Counseling: You’ll receive education on what the test involves, what results may mean, and how findings could impact your care or your family members.

All steps—including consultation, history review, and sample collection—are completed during your appointment.
