Dr. Joseph Shumway serves the women of Tooele County as an Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Mountain West Medical Group Women’s Care and Mountain West Medical Center. Dr. Shumway received his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in 1983 with Summa Cum Laude status (highest honors). He was later awarded a Master of Public Health degree from Columbia University. He completed his Doctorate of Medicine and Surgery in 1988 at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. From 1989 to 1993, he completed his Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). From 1993 to 1995, he completed his fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, Maryland.
After completing his academic training, Dr. Shumway practiced medicine with academic clinical, teaching, and research duties at Missouri Baptist and Barnes Jewish Hospitals as an attending professor and surgeon. Dr. Shumway served as a professor of Obstetrics/Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division at Washington University School of Medicine from 2001 to 2010. During that time, he was also appointed by the State of Illinois as the Director of Maternal & Child safety programs. He was responsible for all births in the Southern Illinois Perinatal network (40 hospitals). He held that appointment from 1995 to 2010 and administered Illinois State mandated reviews of over 1.8 million births for more than 15 years.
Dr. Shumway was appointed the Corporate Chair for Women’s Services at HSHS Systems in Illinois–supervising 24 hospitals as the clinical lead for Women’s Services operations from 2010 to 2014. He led their network-wide quality and safety programs–plus directing their Women’s Services Program Development. During this time, he was still actively engaged in daily patient care duties as a physician and surgeon. Dr. Shumway was the Editor-in-Chief and president of St. Louis Gynecologic and Obstetrical Society from 2005 to 2014.
Before joining Tianjin United Family Hospital as their Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Shumway was a Senior Attending Physician of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Sidra Academic and Teaching Hospital for five years in Doha, Qatar. He led in opening their new flagship Maternal and Pediatric hospital in Doha. He was responsible for the successful activation and accreditation of this new 440 bed academic hospital, affiliated with Cornell Medical School in the USA. During that time, he was also clinically active at Sidra and at the National Hamad Hospital.
Dr. Shumway has been practicing Obstetrics and Gynecology for over 30 years. Until now, he has delivered more than 25,400 newborns, including more than 1,500 sets of twins, and over 300 triplets or 4+ births. He has personally performed more than 8,000 cesarean sections. Dr. Shumway has published more than 500 articles, chapters, and peer-reviewed research papers on obstetrics and gynecology. He has an international reputation for academic and clinical medicine and has lectured extensively throughout the world.
In addition, he has been involved in medical relief and humanitarian activities around the world. His first project was with the United Nations / World Health Organization in Beijing at Beijing University (PKU), Beijing Medical University and Peking Union Hospital in 1989. Since then he has actively consulted on medical relief work on five continents.

Getting to Know Dr. Shumway:
Dr.Shumway grew up in Cheyenne, Wyoming with seven sisters, and was the only son in the family. His father was blinded in World War II so he was accustomed to serving others from an early age. He later met his wife, Maryan, in college and they were married in l984. They have six living children, one baby son died at birth. He enjoys hiking, swimming, reading, doing sculpture work, traveling and being with his family. He has been known to spend summers helping to co-direct a Girls Ranch for teenage girls with his wife. Dr. Shumway is best known in America as the starring doctor in the TV Reality Show the Farrell Quintuplet Story “And then there were Five…” which was aired to a nation-wide audience in 2008 for six episodes. To his patients, he is best known for his personalized care. He is renowned for his excellence in patience care and for many regional “Top Doctor” awards, which are awarded in America by direct patient satisfaction survey results.
