As you live your life, the last thing you want to be bothered by is a urinary problem like a kidney stone, a UTI or incontinence. Urology is a medical and surgical specialty that treats the urinary tracts of men and women, as well as, men’s reproductive systems.

As part of our affiliation strategy with the University of Utah Health, Scott Hopkins, MD is now seeing patients in Tooele. Dr. Hopkins offers his expertise and surgical treatment for urinary disorders of the male and female urinary tracts, as well as conditions of the male genital tract or reproductive system.

Urology specialists work closely with patients to develop individualized treatment plans that include both medical and surgical approaches to a wide range of urological problems. Close collaboration with other U of U Health specialists, as well as the patient's primary care provider, offers patients quality care with the goal of reaching the best possible outcomes.

Conditions Commonly treated include:

• Chronic testicular pain
• Cystoscopy is a simple procedure to diagnose, monitor, and treat conditions affecting the bladder and urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body).
• Ejaculation problems which can be very common for men, and can range from premature ejaculation to delayed ejaculation to Anejaculation (not ejaculating at all)
• Endourology (stone diseases) is a subspecialty of urology which is largely based on using minimally invasive techniques to diagnose conditions and perform procedures. Common endourologic procedures include Cystoscopy, Urethroscopy, Ureteroscopy and Nephroscopy.
• Enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is a very common condition which causes the prostate gland to grow larger. This is very common among men as they get older.
• Erectile dysfunction is the inability to achieve an erection and/or dissatisfaction with the size, rigidity and/or duration of erections. Also known as impotence, this can cause stress, affect self- confidence, and contribute to relationship issues.
• Hydrocele is a condition where the scrotum swells because of a collection of fluid in a sheath around a testicle. Common in young children and babies, it normally goes away on its own. For older men it can be caused by an injury to the scrotum.
• Kidney stones are made up of minerals and salts contained in our urine. Often, they start small and grow larger which can cause intense and worsening pain.
• Low testosterone is a condition where the testicles do not produce enough testosterone, also known as Low T or Testosterone Deficiency Syndrome.
• Neurogenic bladder causes a person to lack control of their bladder often caused by brain, nerve issues, or spinal cord issues.
• Pelvic fractures and urologic injuries can range from mild to severe, with severe fractures requiring surgery.
• Peyronie’s disease
• Priapism is a prolonged erection of the penis that continues for several hours and isn’t caused by sexual stimulation.
• Prostate Cancer
• Radiation injuries often occur with cancer treatments. They can often cause urologic complications like kidney and ureter scarring, strictures to the urethra, urinary problems and in some cases fistulas.
• Rectourethral fistula is a hole that forms between the rectum/anus and the urethra. This can cause urine leakage and other problems. This is often caused by radiation treatments.
• Scrotal lymphedema is a buildup of fluid, causing swelling in the soft tissues of the genital area, caused by a blockage or damage to the lymphatic system.
• Spinal cord injury can cause a disconnect between the brain and the urinary system which may result in incontinence, erectile dysfunction, or loss of sensation.
• Traumatic urologic injury
• Ureteral obstructions and strictures could be caused by scarring (strictures), congenital development problems or external compression.
• Urethral strictures involve scarring that narrows the urethra which carries waste (urine) out of the body. This scarring can be caused by a surgical procedures like vascular surgery in abdomen, OB/GYN surgery, colon/rectum surgery or kidney stone surgery.

• Vesicovaginal fistula is an abnormal opening that can form between the bladder and wall of the vagina and can be a result of vaginal or bladder surgery.
